Motorcycle Wreck Claims the Life of 22 Year-Old Oklahoma City Woman

Newsok.com is reporting that police have identified a 22-yearold woman killed in a motorcycle crash last Friday night.

Police identified Delania Abbott, 22, of Mustang as the woman killed in a crash Friday night in northwest Oklahoma City. According to the story

Abbott was a passenger on a westbound motorcycle involved in the wreck about 10:10 p.m. Friday on the Northwest Expressway at Interstate 44, police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. The motorcycle had been stopped and began to turn left onto eastbound I-44 on a protected green arrow when an oncoming car failed to yield at the red light and crashed into it.

Abbott and her husband, Jason Abbott, 25, were taken to an Oklahoma City hospital, where Delania died Saturday morning and Jason was treated for his injuries, Knight said. The driver of the car, Joanne Persons, 48, of Yukon was not hurt.

Noble Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Norman Wreck

How many times have you driven and almost hit a car or motorcyclist in your blind spot? Do you now take the time to briefly turn and make sure you have clear access to the adjoining lane? It’s a hard lesson learned for many people to take careful consideration of your blind spot while driving.

Regretfully, a Noble motorcyclist is in critical condition today according to newsok.com. The article references the preliminary iinvestigation by the Norman police who state that a vehicle apparently turned left into the path of a westbound motorcycle ridden by the injured man.

I can’t say whether the motorcyclist was in the driver’s blind spot but let’s take this as a reminder to pay special attention to the motorcyclists on our roads. Let’s also keep this cyclist in our thoughts and prayers.

Motorcycle Accidents More Common On Oklahoma Roads

I’v written on this before, but high gas prices is having an amazing effect on more motorcycles being written which in turn equates to more tragic motorcycle wrecks. In what is commonly appearing more and more in our papers, more and more people are dying while riding motorcycles. The Oklahoman is reporting that “at least 31 motorcyclists have died in Oklahoma since May 1.” Although sometimes these are single rider accidents, some of these accidents occur due to the negligence of an automobile driver. In those instances you need to seek out the help of a personal injury lawyer specializing in these accidents. The intracies of moving through the land mine field of automobile/motorcycle accidents is especially dangerous any layman to try.

Failing to Negotiate a Turn - Motorcycle Accidents

All too often I see reports of motorcycle accidents listed in the local paper. An alarmingly majority of those accidents seem to involve people driving at a high rate of speed and failing to negotiate the turn properly. Just this morning, newsok.com is reporting that a young man tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident because he was driving too fast and failed to negotiate a turn.

Instead of stating the obvious as to why you must be careful on these deadly machines, I want to simply want to remind you motorcycle riders that death usually results from a motorcycle crash. I believe that there are more and more motorcycles on the road today so please for all you novice riders, be careful.

High Gas Prices Equal More Motorcycles on the Road

This may be a broad assumption on my part, but I’m quite certain that high gas prices have or are going to increase motorcycle and/or scooter traffic on our highways. Why have I come to that conclusion? Quite simple, the other day I was driving and noticed a motorcycle driving by and on it was a friend I haven’t seen in a couple of years. I was shocked as this was not the type of person that would ordinarily be driving a motorcycle. In fact, I remember talking with him years ago about the dangers of motorcycles and he told me he could never imagine having one while he still had children. Now what changed his mind? I can only conclude the high gas prices and the modern family’s inability to afford to fill their tanks for their daily commute.

Now I bet your wondering what my ranting above is all about. Its quite simple, as a personal injury lawyer, I have seen way too many catastrophic motorcycle crashes that have either resulted in death or horrific injuries. When a call comes in and I learn the wreck happened on a motorcycle, I immediately assume the injuries are grave.

So my advice and you don’t need 7 years of schooling to come to this conclusion. Be careful if you’re riding a motorcycle and even more importantly, all of you who are steel sucking down the gas in your automobile, be wary of increased motorcycle safety. Let’s protect our fathers, mothers, brothers and sisters who are on the roadways in Oklahoma.

Motorcyle Accident - Helmet Safety Tips

In readings some recent blogs I noticed fellow injuryboard blogger Steve Lombardi has been posting on motorcycle safety tips. I thought I would give me two cents and invite everyone to take a look at the Motorcycle Safety Foundations webpage. Specifically the library/safety tips page that has several links to sites for safety and riding tips.

One particular link caught my attention a few months back while working on a motorcycle accident case in Oklahoma. The motorcycle rider wasn’t wearing a helmet and sustained catastrophic injuries when his motorcycle was ran off the road by a driver. We knew who the driver was and the case eventually settled. The worst part though was my clients failure to wear a helmet. It could have saved him a lifetime of injuries and pain as a result of his motorcycle wreck.

Now back to safety. My first tip and I will follow up in coming weeks is that since 1980, all adult-sized helmets for on-highway use must meet DOT standards. Helmet dealers and distributors must ensure that all the helmets they sell bear the DOT sticker. So when you buy a helmet remember this, make sure it bears the DOT sticker less your family contacts me and wonders why your motorcycle helmet did not save your life.
