I have stated several times that 1 in 3 Oklahoma drivers are uninsured. This fact makes it imperative to purchase uninsured motorist coverage as a protection against those driving without insurance. I have been frequenlty asked by client's involved in car accidents, truck accidents and even bicycle accidents whether a claim made on their uninsured motorist coverage will make their premiums go up. For all those wondering, the simple answer is no, insurance companies are prohibited by Oklahoma law from raising rates on a no-fault claim.

The only time that your premiums can be raised following an accident is if you were at fault for the accident. If you make a claim on your policy that is based upon the fault of another person, then your rates will not go up. Section 941 of the Oklahoma Insurance Code says that a company cannot assign driving record points, cancel, refuse to renew or increase the premium rate for any motor vehicle liability or collision insurance policy for the reason that the insured has been involved in a motor vehicle collision and was not at fault.
