Do you take 569 deaths on Oklahoma roads as a good thing?

According to newsok.com, Oklahoma roads have been a safer place for Oklahoma motorists as well as out of state travelers. In the above linked article, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported that

there have been 569 deaths on Oklahoma roads and highways so far this year. That compares to 601 deaths during the same time last year. October also is proving to be less deadly for motorists in Oklahoma this year, with 38 deaths so far this month, compared to 51 deaths during the same time in 2008.

While I am pleased that fewer deaths are occurring on our roads this year I still can’t be satisfied with 569 people dying. Most of these accidents are preventable and as such these statistics can never be considered a good thing.

As I’ve stated in previous blogs and discussed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, October is a particularly deadly month for teen drivers and intoxicated driving accidents. As an Oklahoma City auto accident attorney my practice has usually seen an increase of calls over the winter holidays including Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Typically, these holidays include a lot of people drinking and then getting behind the wheel an automobile. We need to stop this orgy (act of immoderate indulgence) of people from engaging in such acts. Get it on your minds and make sure you don’t let your friends drink and drive over the holidays.
