Newsok.com just picked up an associated press release discussing a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”).   According to the NHTSA more than 2/3 (two thirds) of “young drivers and passengers killed in nighttime car crashes aren't wearing seat belts - deadly proof of what can happen when young people don't heed parents' pleas and authorities' threats to ‘click it.’”

Further, “Sixty-eight percent of drivers and passengers between the ages of 16 and 20 who were killed in car crashes at night in 2006 were unbuckled, said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During daytime, 57 percent of the young motorists and passengers who were killed were not wearing seat belts.”

As a personal injury lawyer in Oklahoma who works extensively in auto crashes and trucking accidents, I want to reiterate the importance of seatbelts.  I’ve seen many horrific car accidents where the people walk away unharmed because of seatbelts.  In contrast, I’ve seen people thrown from vehicles and more deaths due to not wearing seatbelts.

So buckle up Oklahoma, statistics don’t lie.
